How To Become A Tax Filer

In accordance with currently applicable tax laws, a person has to be included in the Active Taxpayer’s List to enjoy perks of lower tax rates on various transactions. Following detailed steps will help you in becoming an Active Taxpayer / Filer.

  • Visit Inland Revenue Integrated System (IRIS) link which is easily accessible through Federal Board of Revenue website/google and other search engines or simply click on this link, https://iris.fbr.gov.pk/infosys/public/txplogin.xhtml
  • Then click on the blue box with the description “Registration for Unregistered Person” and you will be directed to a page where you shall be asked to enter information like
  • CNIC & Salutation.
    First, Middle, and Last name
    Cell Number, service provider, and E-mail Address
    Type of Property you are in procession of, its form, measurement unit, Unit number, Area /Locality, city, district, and your ownership share in the said property.
  • Two different verification codes will be sent to you, one each on the cell phone number and e-mail address. After entering both codes, a login ID will be sent on your registered e-mail address, which can be used to login to your IRIS account to file the Income Tax Return for becoming an Active Taxpayer.
  • After login using the credentials sent to you on your e-mail address, click on the draft folder appearing on the left side of the screen, then click on sub-option registration and then on “181 (Form of Registration filed voluntarily) (Income Tax)”. Fill in the property details and checkbox to select Head Office in case there is more than one property.
  • In case you are a business person, then fill in the Business tab as well with relevant information. Then link your registration with your employer(s) and submit. After some time (usually within the next fifteen to thirty minutes), a registration order will be issued by the IRIS system automatically and this will end the whole successful registration process.
  • Now file the return for the tax year 2019 followed by a surcharge in case the Return is not filed within the due date.

WHO WILL APPEAR IN ALT

From Ist march 2020 only the person who filed Income Tax return for the Tax Year 2019 within due date will appear in ALT.

RETURN FIELD AFTER DUE DATE

Such person shall not included in ATL for the whole year until payment of surcharge. (Section 182A)

SURCHARGE TO APPEAR IN ALT

Visit e.fbr.gov.pk => epayments => income Tax => TY 2019 => Misc => Section Surcharger for ATL Rs. 1000(AOP = Rs. 10,000 Company = Ps. 20,000)

PAYMENTS

Payment made through Cash/Cheque at NBP Branches or through ADC.

Please make sure that you have entered correct addresses and bank details as providing wrong information to tax authorities is a punishable offense. If you fall under any of the following categories of persons, then you are also required to file an Income Tax Return.

  • Every Company.
  • Every person (other than a company) whose taxable income for the year exceeds the maximum amount (Rs. 6 Lac for Salary Individuals and Rs. 3 Lac for Business Individuals) that is not chargeable to tax under this Ordinance for the year.
  • Any non-profit organization as defined in clause (36) of section 2.
  • Any welfare institution approved under clause (58) of Part I of the Second Schedule.
  • Has been charged to tax in respect of any of the two preceding tax years.
  • Has claimed a loss carried forward under Income Tax Ordinance, 2001 for a tax year;
  • Owns immovable property with a land area of 500 square yards or more or owns any flat located in areas falling within the municipal limits existing immediately before the commencement of Local Government laws in the provinces; or areas in a Cantonment; or the Islamabad Capital Territory.
  • Owns immovable property with a land area of 500 square yards or more located in a rating area.
  • Owns a flat having a covered area of two thousand square feet or more located in a rating area.
  • Owns a motor vehicle having engine capacity above 1000 CC.
  • Has obtained National Tax Number.
  • Has commercial or industrial connection of electricity where the amount of annual bill exceeds Rs. 500,000/-
  • A resident person registered with any chamber of commerce and industry or any trade or business association or any market committee or any professional body including PEC, PMDC, Pakistan Bar Council, or any Provincial Bar Council, ICAP, and ICMA Pakistan.
  • Every resident person being an individual is required to file the foreign income and assets statement under section 116A.
